FRED Engineering is excited to announce the award of a crucial project focused on improving road safety in Guyana. This initiative, backed by financing from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and the United Kingdom Caribbean Infrastructure Partnership Fund (UKCIF), targets the Linden to Mabura Hill (LMH) road corridor, a vital connection between Guyana’s hinterland and coastal regions. The LMH road is currently unpaved, suffers from structural issues, poor geometry, and limited safety features, often becoming impassable during the rainy season. The project aims to upgrade the first 121km of this roadway to all-weather status, incorporating improved drainage, structures, geometry, and safety features.
The technical assistance provided by FRED Engineering will focus on several key objectives to bolster road safety in the region. These include the development and implementation of a socially-inclusive and gender-responsive Road Safety Education Awareness Programme. The consultancy will also work to enhance road safety through institutional strengthening along the LMH road corridor.
Our tasks will encompass a comprehensive approach. We will develop a Communication Strategy and produce materials to raise public road safety awareness across various media channels. A significant aspect will be emphasizing road safety awareness for diverse groups, including men, women, different age cohorts (children, youth, elderly, working age), persons with disabilities (PWDs), and indigenous peoples in both urban and peri-urban areas. Furthermore, we will assess the success of the implemented strategy , evaluate the Government of Guyana’s (GOGY) capacity to prepare for and respond to road crashes , and assess GOGY’s capacity to monitor and enforce traffic laws. Our work will also include identifying measures and estimating associated costs to overcome any identified capacity weaknesses. This project is expected to span a maximum of twelve months.
