FRED Engineering Secures Major Road Safety Contract in DRC

FRED Engineering is set to lead a transformative road safety project in the Democratic Republic of Congo, establishing a national crash database and providing advanced technical training to key stakeholders under the World Bank-funded PACT initiative

We are proud to announce that FRED Engineering has been awarded a critical technical assistance contract in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to modernize national road safety data management and strengthen institutional capacity.

Driving Innovation for Safer Roads in the DRC

At FRED Engineering, our mission has always been to leverage technical excellence for public safety. We are honored to officially begin our latest mission: providing technical assistance for the design and implementation of a national road safety and crash data management system in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This project is a vital component of the Support to Connectivity and Transport Project (PACT), financed by the World Bank (IDA). With road fatalities reaching 1.2 million globally each year, the DRC is taking a decisive step toward the United Nations’ goal of reducing road deaths and injuries.

Our Mission Objectives

The absence of a viable national registration system has historically made it difficult to obtain precise data on road crashes in the DRC. Our team will address this by:

  • Institutional Assessment: Evaluating current data collection workflows and legal frameworks across ministries.
  • System Development: Designing and deploying a robust national database featuring web-based entry and a mobile application for real-time data collection at crash sites.
  • Analytical Empowerment: Integrating tools for ‘black spot’ mapping and economic cost calculations to help policymakers make data-driven decisions.
  • Capacity Building: Conducting specialized training for over 50 personnel in Kinshasa, Mbujimayi, and Goma on crash statistics and digital management.
  • Historical Data Entry: Digitizing and analyzing crash records from the past four years (2020–2023) to establish a clear baseline for safety interventions.

A Collaborative Effort

Operating under the Cellule Infrastructures (CI), we will work in close coordination with the National Road Prevention Commission (CNPR) and other key stakeholders to ensure this system provides a sustainable, long-term solution for the Congolese people.

This 12-month mission reinforces FRED Engineering’s position as a global leader in road safety consulting and our commitment to developing resilient infrastructure in Sub-Saharan Africa.
