We are thrilled to announce that FRED Engineering has officially commenced its work on the Infrastructure for Resilient Island States (IRIS) project in Papua New Guinea (PNG). This marks a significant milestone for our company as we extend our expertise eastward, contributing to the development of climate-resilient infrastructure in a region facing unique environmental challenges.
Papua New Guinea, with its susceptibility to extreme weather events, requires robust and sustainable infrastructure solutions. The Government of PNG, through the Department of Works and Highways, in partnership with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), is taking decisive action to address these challenges with the IRIS project.
FRED Engineering is playing a crucial role in this initiative by providing specialized consultancy services aimed at:
- Enhancing the Regulatory Frameworks: We are working diligently to update and review road design and standards, incorporating critical climate-resilient components. This includes developing guidelines on climate-proofing infrastructure and crafting operational manuals for road infrastructure life cycles, integrating climate change and Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) considerations.
- Stakeholder Awareness: We are actively engaging with relevant stakeholders, both public and private, to ensure effective consultation and support for the development of climate-resilient road transport infrastructure.
Our contributions will directly support the IRIS project’s key objectives:
- Strengthening knowledge and partnerships for integrating climate resilience into infrastructure in PNG.
- Improving the climate resilience of road infrastructure, ensuring it can withstand the impacts of extreme weather events.
- Enhancing GESI in infrastructure development, ensuring that the benefits of resilient infrastructure reach vulnerable communities.
This project is not just about building roads; it’s about building a sustainable future for the people of Papua New Guinea. By focusing on policy reviews and developing relevant guidelines, we are directly addressing the legal frameworks necessary to enable climate-resilient infrastructure development.
This project represents FRED Engineering’s commitment to expanding our impact and contributing to sustainable development on a global scale. We are honored to be a part of this vital initiative and look forward to the positive outcomes it will bring to Papua New Guinea.
