Work begins on a new project in Africa

FRED has just signed a contract with the EIB for technical assistance in Chad

Work begins on a new project in Sub-Saharan Africa. This time the FRED team will be working in Chad, a new country in the company’s already rich portfolio.

The contract was signed with the European Investment Bank (EIB) and concerns technical assistance aimed at modernising Chad’s road network and improving road safety. Specifically, the assistance includes the Road Safety Impact Assessment (RSIA) and Road Safety Audit (RSA) of the preliminary design of some sections along the N’Djamena – Moundou – Cameroon Border road corridor (596 km).

The corridor is not only one of the first most circulated artery roads in Chad, but it is also a vital axis from the point of view of opening up population areas. This corridor is of undeniable strategic interest for the dynamics of Chad’s internal and external trade and the international trade of the Central African sub-region.

The corridor route is one of the most populous in Chad. It affects several regions of the country and crosses several towns and villages along its entire length, the most important of which in terms of cities being Moundou, Bongor, Kelo, Guelendeng, Mandalia, Krim Krim.

The activities will include:

  • assessment of the baseline of road crashes, injuries and fatalities on the current road
  • assessment of the expected relative impact of the preliminary project design
  • formulating recommendations for improving the design
  • assessment of the expected relative impact of the project after inclusion of RSA recommendations
  • assessment of the recommendations to achieve an overall 3 Star Rating for the road project according to iRAP protocol

This highly challenging technical assistance is particularly interesting because it will allow the implementation of a mixture of methodologies that FRED staff have been employing for some time in other regions of the world.

In particular, it will be particularly interesting to apply the iRAP method to define the baseline status of in-built infrastructure safety and assess the expected improvement once the recommendations are implemented.
